Ready, Freddy?

Ready, Freddy? 〰️

Every freshman in college wonders how they’ll make friends and get involved. Thankfully, my first chance at joining a student organization came with a flyer in my mailbox that resulted in a paper cut. Even in that moment of pain, I still found myself interested in the idea of serving my own residence hall: Freddy House. Without much hesitation, I applied to operate as a Media Coordinator for Freddy Hall Council and was accepted into the position with open arms. From there, I created content and flyers in order to entice students into getting involved in our community. Whether it was doing weekly Resident Assistant highlights, pitching new events such as Freddy Fry Friday, or even working alongside my fellow executive board members: I found myself learning skills such as teamwork, creativity, and attention to detail during my time in this role. I was even given a Silver Bell from Residence Hall Association, the highest award a hall council member can receive.

In January of 2020, we had to impeach our Vice President due to their lack of involvement in our organization and by a unanimous and unknown decision, all of my peers voted me in as Vice President due to my hard work and dedication to the group. I accepted my new role and continued to serve as the Media Coordinator while also taking on the new responsibilities as Vice President, even through COVID-19 I was creating infographics to try and keep spirits up during those unprecedented times.

Even though my experience in hall council was nothing short of normal due to COVID, I was able to gain so much knowledge and experience because of it. For the first time, I had to truly adapt to a new sense of normal and cater my skills to help others. Even though it was difficult, it taught me how to adapt to new situations and be more intentional about the way I conduct myself as an individual by being mindful on how I interact with others and setting more concise goals.
